1990-1996 Alan Harrison
Robert Alan Harrison, born in 1948, was a moderately successful jump jockey before deciding to hang up his riding boots and join the training ranks. He rode just 5 winners, all for Jumbo Wilkinson. He married Gillian Harrison (nee Spensley) who also rode as an amateur rider, the pair being closely associated with David Chapman and Ernie Weymes. The couple had a daughter, Kelly, who enjoyed pony racing as a youngster and went on to become a jockey. Alan successfully applied for his trainer's licence in 1990 and began training from Arundel House in the famous Kirkgate area of Middleham, close to Kingsley House and Warwick House. In 1990 he trained 13 horses, but by 1991 this increased to17 before falling to 15 the next year, and just 11 in 1993. His stable star in the first year as a trainer was Highflying, owned by B Batey, who was invariably partnered to many successes by Kieren Fallon. After its many successes in 1990 Highflying moved just down the road to the stables of George Moore.

Between 1991 and 1996 Alan's best horse was Ashdren, owned by Darlington property developer Norman Brennen, who chalked up numerous wins at Ripon, Fakenham, Ayr and Leicester, although its highest profile victory was in the 1990 Firth of Forth Handicap at Edinburgh. Other good horses trained by Alan included Darika Lad, Seraphim, Kadari and Lapiaffe. In April 1994 Alan was joined at Arundel House by Irish born apprentice John Stack who quickly made a name for himself riding a dozen winners in his early days as an apprentice. When Alan retired from the training ranks, at the end of the 1996 season, he became a jockeys agent, and in 1997 trainer Ferdy Murphy, then based at Highwall Stables, just across the road from Arundel House, used Harrison's stables as a second yard. Tragically, wife Gillian died of a brain tumour in 2008 aged just 51.
